OK, so let me preface this with a qualification. I really like coffee. I have specific preferences. I don't just order whatever I see on a poster in my local Starbucks window. In fact, I would say that my standards for "good coffee" are higher than most people. So, this might sound elitist. Oh well.
When one goes to a coffee shop that doesn't have exceptionally good coffee, there really isn't much of a point in being picky. Chances are, even if they roast their own coffee, that it will taste about the same as anywhere else. I get the fact that people have normal tastes that they like, but in the end, most of the nuances of taste that are supposed to be appreciated get lost in the intense amounts of sugar and milk that get dumped into the drink. And it's not just that whatever differences there actually are might be covered up by things added in afterwards. Imagine that you were asking the difference in tone between cellos made in a factory in Thailand and a factory in the Philippines. Or between the engine performance of a 1985 Chevy pickup and a 1985 Ford pickup. Sure, there are things that probably are different between the two, but when it comes down to it, it's not like either one will be mind blowing. So when I'm sitting there drinking an average espresso, I have to laugh inside at the some people.
Lol. If you are one of these people...carry on. You are probably the ones keeping the coffee shop business good. But I might internally laugh at you sometimes.
